Stewardship Council

The Gospel message invites us, as Christians, to follow a different path ~ a road less traveled.  As people of faith and members of a parish faith community, we are called to live differently.  As Christians, the road less traveled is a continuing spiritual journey.  That journey includes living as Christian Stewards.

Stewardship can be defined as “ … a spiritual consciousness or lifestyle based in both the Old and New Testament that holds that we are lifelong caretakers of God’s spiritual and worldly blessings.”

The Role and Purpose of the Stewardship Council is:

  • To cooperate with God in our own redemption and in the redemption of others by teaching the lifestyle of a Christian steward.
  • To collaborate with the Pastoral Council in parish-wide stewardship events.
  • To work in concrete ways to make the parish of St. John the Baptist a true community of faith and a vibrant source of service to the larger community.
  • To serve as examples of a Christian steward to all Catholics through our commitment to time, talent and treasure to the parish of St. John the Baptist.

Membership Eligibility:

  • The pastor appoints the members for a 3-year term.
  • Member’s terms do not end when the pastor leaves.  They remain a consultative group for the next pastor or for the parish administrator in the interim.
  • Be a registered member of the parish.
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to the parish community.
  • Be in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Be 18 years of age or older, having completed Confirmation or be in the process of preparation for and completion of Confirmation and committed to spiritual growth.
  • Commit themselves to attending and participating in Christian formation as part of the Christian leadership process to further their understanding the pastoral role of the laity.
  • Be willing to commit the necessary time and energy to offer effective consultation through their stewardship of time, talent and treasure.

Composition and Duties of the Stewardship Council:

  • A chairperson may be appointed by the president to conduct the meetings.
  • A secretary is appointed to take the minutes.
  • Meetings are held regularly as determined by a consensus of the council and shall be held at times and places scheduled by the council with the pastor’s approval.
  • All council decisions shall be made by consensus, with concerns noted and recorded.
  • Individuals or groups from the parish may be invited to address the council.

Transition to a New Pastor:

The council continues in existence even when no permanent pastor is assigned.  It cannot act on its own, but remains a consultative group for the parish administrator during the interim period before a permanent pastor is assigned and remains as a council for the new pastor.  It is not reconstituted when a new pastor is appointed.
