Deacon Jerrold Kunkel of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato — reached by cell phone Wednesday in Clermont Harbor, Miss. — led a group of 11 parishioners south. Kunkel said he was struck by the stories he heard from locals, who told him many statues of Mary weathered the storm unscathed while nearby buildings were destroyed. “It left a big impression on me that our Blessed Mother is watching out for us,” he said. Kunkel and his crew were spending a week sleeping in the rectory of the Catholic Church of St. Anne as they repaired extensive storm damage to the church. The Rev. Truong Q Trinh said he needs visiting volunteers to do the reconstruction work because his parishioners are busy rebuilding their homes. “The church is very important because it is the center of the community,” Trinh said. “It is also the center of getting help.” CNHI News Service—published February 28, 2006
